Close final goes down to the wire17 June 2016 (by Mrs Atkinson (parksidepri)) |
8th annual table tennis tournament ends with tense match.
After an exciting Sports Day this morning, the competitive spirit continued at lunchtime with the final of the Year 6 Table Tennis tournament. This annual competition, which is organised by the Midday Supervisors, is in its eighth year at Parkside.
The matches have been contested over a number of weeks with a large proportion of the Year 6 children taking part. After victories in the semi finals sent Robbie and Oliver through to the final, a play off match took place ending in Keane taking third place and Kadey fourth.
The final between Robbie and Oliver was an extremely tense match. Watched by the rest of the Year 6, the pair were very evenly matched with the score remaining close. At times you could almost hear a pin drop as the respectful audience let the two players concentrate, and then cheering erupted as each made excellent shots.
In the end it was Oliver who was victorious and was presented with the winner's trophy. It was fantastic to see a spontaneous and sportsmanlike handshake between the two finalists as soon the match ended. All four pupils received certificates and prizes for their efforts. Mr Pheby was also presented with his prize for winning the staff tournament.
