Music

Statement of Intent

We aim to provide all pupils with a vehicle through which they can express themselves musically. All pupils are given the opportunity to learn an instrument and aim to engage all children through regular singing opportunities and develop a sense of enjoyment through singing. We want pupils to be critical listeners and develop skills in evaluating and recreating their own music.

Aims

The national curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods,
genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and
    musicians
  • learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and
with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology
appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical
    excellence
  • understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including
through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture,
    structure and appropriate musical notations.

Music at Parkside

Each class takes part in weekly music lessons following the Charanga Musical School Scheme. The scheme introduces all aspects of the National Curriculum, providing a wide selection of music pieces to listen and respond to, vocal and instrumental teaching, opportunities to improvise, compose and perform music, and exposure to musical notation throughout every lesson.

In addition, children in Year 3 benefit from specialist instruction from a Ukulele teacher from the Music and Arts Service.

Children take part in weekly singing assemblies from Years 1 to 6, and children in EYFS experience songs and rhymes as an integral part of their daily learning.

Extra-curricular options include singing and musical theatre clubs, and the opportunity to partake in concerts such as Young Voices at the Fly DSL Arena, and the Big Sing and Little Big Sing at The Junction in Goole.

What have we been doing in Music?

Year 5 have been investigating brass instruments and music notation. They have been learning about 4 beats to a bar and discovering different ways that a bar can be made up of crotchets & quavers etc. (April 2024)
